Boron nitride is an important wear-resistant material.

Aug 26,2025

Boron nitride is an important wear-resistant material characterized by high hardness and a high melting point, making it widely used in applications such as abrasive machining, coating materials, and ceramic manufacturing. Currently, the main methods for synthesizing boron nitride are the direct reaction method and the thermal decomposition method, allowing users to select the most suitable approach based on their specific requirements.

Typically, boron nitride is produced in a graphite-like structure, commonly referred to as "white graphite." Another form is the diamond-like type, which resembles the process by which graphite transforms into diamond. Under high temperatures (1800°C) and extreme pressures (8000 MPa [or 5–18 GPa]), graphite-type boron nitride can be converted into its diamond-like form. This new material is an ultra-hard, high-temperature-resistant substance widely used in manufacturing drill bits, abrasives, and cutting tools.
